• Dr. George C. Edwards III, Presidential historian and Distinguished Professor of Political Science at Texas A&M University met with academics and students at Griffith University and talked on The Influence of the Oval Office in conversation with Dr. John Hewson at the Queensland Performing Arts Centre.

American pianist Anna Klein performed her Australian Debut Recital in Adelaide on October 2.

Anna is a graduate of the Manhattan School of Music and following her 2002 Debut at Carnegie Hall and has toured extensively in the United States and Latin America.

September 2004

• Sydney Consulate staff and local volunteers returned to the memorial garden planted last year to honor those who died on September 11, 2001. A diverse group planted additional trees and tended the garden in Annandale’s Cohen Reserve sharing stories and pausing to reflect on the anniversary of September 11 and the lives most recently lost to terrorism in Beslan and Jakarta.
• The Public Affairs Section organized a visa briefing for international student exchange advisers in Brisbane.
• The Consulate’s Educational Advisers participated in the Live and Learn Overseas Information Night in Brisbane.
• The Public Affairs Section briefed NSW teachers who are participating in a year-long teaching exchange in the U.S.
• U.S. writer Bill Roorbach appeared at the Brisbane Writers’ Festival with support from the Public Affairs Section.

• Congressional Research Service analyst Larry Nowels spoke to audiences in Sydney and Brisbane on the U.S. government’s new foreign aid initiative the Millennium Challenge Account.
• Dr. Derek Shearer, Stuart Chevalier Professor of Public Diplomacy and World Affairs, Occidental College spoke on the Politics of Trade to business, academic and government audiences in Sydney and Brisbane.
• The Consulate’s educational advisers provided information on postgraduate study opportunities in the U.S. at the Global Careers Forum organized by the U.N. Society at the University of New South Wales.
• The USS Russell, one of the US Navy’s newer destroyers, made a port-call in Sydney and hosted local defense industry experts aboard for a tour of the ship’s Aegis systems./li>
• A U.S. Navy salvage ship the USS Salvor called into Sydney to train with Australian navy divers. Officers met with local members of the Australian-American Association for a welcome reception.
• Judge Diarmuid O’Scannlain, Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals, presented a talk on Law and the U.S. judiciary post the Supreme Court ruling on detainees at an event co-hosted by the Constitutional Law Section of the New South Wales Bar Association, and the Australian Association of Constitutional Law.
• Dr. Sylvia Earle, marine biologist, participated in Science Week activities in Sydney.

Judge O’Scannlain August 24 to 30, 2004

Judge O’Scannlain visited Australia recently from August 24 to 30 traveling to Sydney, Melbourne and Canberra. He delivered a series of seminars on “Law and the U.S. judiciary post the Supreme Court ruling on detainees” and Judicial administration and reform, at the Sydney Bar Association, the ACT Law Society, ANU and Monash University. He conducted a series of high level meetings with the Solicitor General official of the Attorney Generals Department and The Australian Judiciary, including Justices of the Federal and High Courts.

Dr. Derek Shearer visits Australia - August 8 to 23, 2004

Dr. Shearer was in Australia discussing issues such as “The Politics of Trade” with audiences in Sydney, Canberra, Melbourne, Perth, Adelaide, and Brisbane under the U.S. Speaker Program. A member of the Occidental Faculty since 1981, Dr. Shearer is the Stuart Chevalier Professor of Public Diplomacy and World Affairs. His distinguished career includes service as U.S. ambassador to Finland; deputy undersecretary of commerce for economic affairs in the Clinton administration; senior policy advisor to then-Gov. Bill Clinton; and economic advisor to California Gov. Jerry Brown. He received his B.A. in economics and history from Yale, and a Ph.D. in public policy from Union Graduate School.

• Department of State Senior Advisor for Missile Defense Policy, Dr. Kerry Kartchner, spoke to audiences in Brisbane and Sydney on the USG’s missile defense initiative.
• Visit of the Aegis cruiser USS Port Royal (CG-73) to Sydney. USS Port Royal hosted a small reception. Some crew participated in community projects while in Sydney including Uniting Care’s Pancake Day fundraiser at Hyde Park.
