Disaster Preparedness for Americans in Australia
Within Australia, dial 000 for Fire/Ambulance/Police Emergencies.
Each Australian State and Territory has its own arrangements and organizations dedicated to dealing with emergencies.
In addition, the Australian Government assists the States and Territories to enhance their capabilities and provides extra resources if requested.
The Role of the Consulate
In the event of a major crisis, Australian authorities will respond directly to the general situation.
American citizens should cooperate with Australian authorities in the event of a crisis and clearly identify themselves as Americans. Those connected with larger organizations such as companies, schools or church groups should try to let these organizations know of their welfare and whereabouts if this is practical.
The Consulate General serving your area will be in touch with Australian authorities and with larger umbrella organizations to attempt to identify as many American Citizens as possible and determine their welfare. We will help you get information about the situation and communicate with Australian government officials if necessary in order to obtain proper food, shelter and medical attention.
In addition, we will pass as much information as possible about the welfare of individual U.S. citizens back to the Department of State in Washington, D.C. so that this information may be shared with your families, friends and employers.
What You Can Do
- Register with the Consulate
- Familiarize yourself with Australian government plans for your area
- Develop a personal emergency plan & prepare a ‘go bag’ (& ensure each family or personnel member is familiar with it)
