APEC Business Travel Card (ABTC) Frequently Asked Questions

Do I still need a visa if I have an ABTC card?

Yes, you will still need a visa to travel to the United States unless you qualify for the Visa Waiver Program.

Why do I still need a visa/interview?

U.S. law requires visa interviews in most cases and possession of the ABTC card does not exempt travelers from this requirement. However, holders of the ABTC card will be eligible to participate in business facilitation programs, which offer expedited visa interview appointments should they be necessary. Business travelers are still encouraged to apply for visas well in advance of their intended travel.

Does ABTC card guarantee visa issuance or admissibility at the port of entry?

No, but in recognition of importance of business travel, the ABTC card does assist in obtaining expedited access to an interview appointment should it be necessary, and facilitates access to special entry lanes at ports of entry.

What if I have an ABTC card and a U.S. visa, do I need to apply for a new visa?

No, the ABTC card, not the visa, will allow ABTC holders the access to existing business facilitation programs at embassies/consulates and access to the facilitated inspection lanes used by airline crew at all U.S. international ports of entry. Possession of the ABTC card will not change visa requirements, your visa status, or the visa process.
